My passion for art can be traced back to my childhood. I always loved painting and drawing. I remember childhood art making as pleasurable, giving me a sense of competency and self expression.
As an adolescent I discovered my preferred medium when my paternal grandmother gifted me a set of watercolors. I began experimenting and developed a relationship with the translucent and fickle medium. It taught me to keep an open mind in the creative process and allow the paint to lead. It’s a lesson that I continue to learn again and again.
As a self-taught artist, I continue to explore watercolor in original, innovative ways, dismissing classical technique in favor of more freedom and spontaneity. This renegade approach lends itself to an engaging, amusing, and vibrant style.
In addition to art, I am passionate about language learning. My brain is happy when it is chipping away at a new language, like solving a riddle or cracking a secret code. New languages add new colors to my palette. I lived in Taxco, Mexico for several years and became fluent in Spanish. The colors, flavors, and iconography of Mexico weave their way into my work and nourish my creativity.
I'm currently and temporarily living in Taipei, Taiwan growing my Mandarin Chinese language skills. This experience is sparking new ways of seeing the world, as any time spent living in another country and learning a new language does. I am particularly drawn to the art of Chinese calligraphy, with its varied styles fusing art and language. The abstract pictographs have for millennia been the visual representations of concepts in the world's oldest living language. I look forward to the unfolding of new directions in my painting as a result of this experience. I never know what will emerge. Art, like life, is a wondrous adventure!
